Tested out the 35L on some unwilling subjects yesterday. Very underwhelming, sharpness leaves alot to be desired and at wide open it simply screams Chromatic Abberation.

I want to tear my hair out.

The challenge: Fit in 2 degrees, and at least 2 majors, into 6 semesters.

The difficulty: Hell lot of credits, hell lots of logistics because it has to fulfill requirements for both degrees and majors. Nearly everything has prerequisites, so you can’t chiong all together, and many are only available either in spring or fall, making it worse. Plus I’m not even looking at the schedules and many of them may clash even if I can satisfy all requirements.

Result: Splitting headache.

Today

July 11, 2009

Delighted: Because 1C scored quite well.

Impatient: Because I had to wait over an hour to rent a lens that I didn’t really desire that much. Plus the service was terrible, the assistants were super slow and inefficient and the customers in front of me took a long time. Like this girl went there and asked what she should rent for a party because she didn’t have a clue. Which is not wrong but terribly frustrating when it makes you one and a half hours late for your next appointment. And thank goodness she was gonna rent the last copy of 35L because the assistants recommended it but settled for a 24-105 instead. Phew. Thank goodness newbies don’t like primes.

Out of breath: After counter-attacking once during polo. Despite going for swimming regularly the past 2 weeks, I’m totally out of match shape. Gasping for air after 1 minute is not good. And I shot bird, erm thrice. But scored the final goal, like yay.

Happy: To see everybody again. Besides juniors whom I haven’t seen due to the segregation, and overseas people like the whiter and fatter Tubby and Marc Jo. Probably will play once more for July and then who knows when I’ll next play with this group again. Hopefully there’s a next time.

Dulan: Went back to school after tuition in the night to get some other classes’ scripts home for marking. Had to walk one huge round because the security guard told me that the side gate was closed throughout the weekend, even though I used it earlier in the day. Then when I left school, I saw a group of boarders enter using the side gate.

Apprenhensive: Wondering how the other classes will fare.

Marking

July 11, 2009

I’ve just started marking the first of my 215 scripts for a time based written assignment this week. I like the fact that it is alot more open than the previous one, allowing the students more scope to express their own views. And it’s really interesting to read and grade their answers. Though not everything is correct, it’s heartening to see some mature and quality answers and it’s always fun to read and see how each and every one of them do.

There’s some joy in marking after all.

Shall see if they meet the standard i privately set for them.

(Edit. I just finished marking my first class, which was my best class from the previous time, by far. One failure this time, quite sad. Though it’s a 47.5% compared to the worst previous time which was 17.5%… and the average soared from 60.5% to 74.75%! Looks like Operation PSGM had it’s desired effect. Now to find out how the other classes did…)

Witness Protection

Lebron James got dunked on by a college kid in a summer game! It was caught on tape and so James got the journalist to delete it.

First he walks off the court when a game is still on-going, then he refuses to shake hands with the Magic after getting eliminated, and now denying the world a youtube hit, think Jordan on Mutombo or Carter over the super tall European or Nate over Howard.

For somebody they call the King, he needs to show some royal graciousness.

Meanwhile our neighbours are up in arms over the plan to abolition the system of teaching of Math and Science in English. If I was suddenly told to sit for my exams in Chinese I’d be pissed too.

OH MY ENROLLING FOR COURSES IS SO BLOODY CONFUSING AND TROUBLESOME!!! HOW TO PICK WHEN THERE ARE MILLIONS OF COURSES!!

SOMEBODY PLEASE INVENT A QUICK PICK SYSTEM FOR IT!!!

Weird predicament when a fisherman finally gets a catch and doesn’t know what to do with it.

(Update: Speaking to 3 seniors just restore some sanity in me)

I like black and white, I don’t like grey

July 8, 2009

It’s a fanaticism that permeates nearly every aspect of my life.

And humour is man’s natural defence mechanism.

School is turning into a FFA. 2nd Sem appears to be an opportune time to go on maternity leave and some familiar faces are popping up one by one, like S enthil started today, Stally came back again, and I heard B enny’s somewhere about. Mr Goh was totally owning today, Mrs Ng was so totally amused by his antics when he let this guy sit in the middle of a entire class taking a Math (pronounced Mehffff) test because there weren’t enough scripts. Got the entire staffroom chuckling. My classes are having a test this week, still waiting for the answer scheme to begin marking. I so totally hate to see ability being wasted. In a somewhat O RD mood these days, the zeal and pristine enthusiasium (can you describe enthusiasium as pristine?) all but evaporated. Getting too pally with the kids, and too weary to put up strong defenses against their overwhelming attempts to reduce the teacher-student wall to rubble. It’s so tiring to keep the facade going and I can’t wait to be plain friends with everyone in 3 weeks time.

Did some shopping after school and blew quite abit of cash in a bizarre bout of spendthrift-ness. And there was this arh-jay couple PDA-ing in the middle of taka, which was so inviting a headline on ST OMP and My P aper.

The numbers speak for themselves. 15 Grand Slams in 25 tries, Pete Sampras took 45 attempts to garner his 14.

Playing with old photos.

1-1

I’m trying to sort out all my photos and attempt to create a portfolio of some sort but there’re lots of problems because I didn’t exactly catalog them very well in the past and there’s alot of inconsistency in the I.Q. I’d say I’ve found a comfort zone in shooting over the last year, and have learnt some basic PP techniques. Used to be a disbeliever of post-processing, but I eventually yielded. Wished I’ve gone for some sort of course of something before embarking on photography though, now when I pick up something new I try it out so everything’s all over the place.

Been spending my evenings watching AYG Swimming. Today was the last day of competition and our golden girls capped off an impressive meet with 2 more golds to add to our medal tally. Despite all the complaints about the poor organisation of this inaugural sporting spectacle (I’ve experienced some of it myself), I still think that on the field/court/pool/lanes/beach/whatever, the performances of Asia’s Youth has been encouraging. Some relative unknowns have been firmly thrusted into the public spotlight, which was part of the plan. I think QTW can no longer step into school without everybody knowing her now, if that wasn’t the case already. Wish I could have done some photography for it though, getting addicted to this stuff, I should badger the YOG person for next year.
